Beyond the Classroom

About Beyond the Classroom

Beyond the Classroom is a juried art exhibition created to spotlight the talent of local high-school artists. Open to students in grades 9–12 from public, private, home-school, and alternative programs, the exhibit invites young creators to submit their best work, from traditional media to innovative, experimental pieces. Selected artworks are displayed in the museum as part of the annual Beyond the Classroom showcase exhibition.

Awards & Student Opportunities

The program provides meaningful recognition and support for emerging artists:

  • Scholarships for art classes, college-level courses, or art supplies are awarded to top-scoring students, as chosen by a qualified jury panel.

  • Juried feedback is given to all participants, offering valuable guidance for growth, portfolios, and future art studies.

  • Public exhibition experience gives students the chance to display their work in a museum setting.

Who Can Participate

Beyond the Classroom is open to all Matanuska Valley-area high-school students, regardless of school type or district.
The program is organized by the museum with the support of community partners and local sponsors, who help make the scholarships and exhibition possible.

Program Timeline

The exhibit is held annually. Each year, the museum releases updated application materials and invites students to submit their artwork for consideration. Dates, deadlines, and submission guidelines are provided with each year’s call for entries.

Why This Program Matters

Beyond the Classroom strengthens the connection between young artists and the cultural heritage the museum preserves. The exhibition:

  • Supports arts education through scholarships, recognition, and community engagement

  • Celebrates the creativity of local youth

  • Encourages students to see their work as part of the community’s cultural story

  • Builds a bridge between classroom learning and public artistic expression

By showcasing student work in a museum setting, the program helps cultivate the next generation of artists, thinkers, and community storytellers.
