June 2nd, 1935

On Sunday, June 2nd, as families settled into their tent camps and began clearing land, some took the time to write to folks back home.

Margaret Miller wrote

We went to church at Palmer this morning.  Notice was given so late that the turn-out was small . . . Most who attended today were from the camp located right at Palmer.  The Sunday school attendance was 66 in spite of considerable measles in camp.  However, when it becomes known that busses will call every Sunday at all camps, I am sure we will have a real going concern. . . About one-sixth of the colonists are Catholics.  They have their mass at nine o’clock in the community tent.  Then the protestants have Sunday school at ten and church at eleven in the same tent.  We all ride in together in the school busses.  The protestants wait for the Catholics; then the Catholics wait for the protestants.  I listened in on part of the Catholic service this morning and wondered why we had two churches.

Lawrence Vasanoja sent postcards to his siblings in Minnesota.
